What Is a Spinning Class?
The spinning program, created and licensed by Mad Dogg Athletics, was designed to incorporate high-intensity workouts, enthusiasm, and motivation.
This kind of fitness class uses a unique exercise bike called the spin bike. They are designed like outdoor bicycles but allow for various movements that may not be possible when travelling down a bike lane or trail.
Using upbeat music, motivational coaches, and the occasional interestingly lit room, the spinning class will bring joy to your workout.
Instead of just riding on an exercise bike in the traditional fashion, you’ll be encouraged to change up your speed, your body’s position, and your mindset!
You’ll find yourself doing many positions throughout the spinning class, including things like standing up while riding.
Take a look at the video below for an example of a spin class routine. Notice the funky lights, bright music, and loud instructor.
It’s common to see spin classes where the bikes are lined up together and those taking the class are facing mirrors (and their instructor, who is facing them!)
Most spin classes last between 40 and 60 minutes. Though, you can often find shorter sessions (especially if they are more intense.)
Many studios use specific spinner bikes and are a part of the “Official Spinning Facility Network“, but some courses have taken to using exercise bikes that aren’t spinning-specific.
So, if you’re eager to take a spinning-specific class, make sure you check out their website before moving forward!
What Are the Health Benefits of Spinning?
Why should we spin anyway? Beyond the fun method of exercise, there are various health benefits to spinning. They include:
- It will make you stronger
- It has cardiovascular benefits
- It can help facilitate weight loss and fat burning
Curious about getting stronger through spin classes? The following muscles are exercised during a spin class:
- Your core
- Your upper body
- Your back
- Your glutes
- Your hamstrings
- Your quadriceps
- Your lower legs
Not bad for one workout!
It is important to note, however, that this is a highly demanding workout. You can tone down your intensity and do modified versions of spin classes, or stick to beginner-friendly ones.
Though you’ll still be putting pressure on your muscles, so it’s best to sit this one out if you’re recovering from an injury.
Where Can You Go to Spin Class?
Spinning classes are so popular. Their increasing popularity has made it pretty easy to find classes around the world.
Many boutique fitness studios will offer regular spin classes, having classes for those with different levels of fitness ranging in beginner to advanced.
Many chain gyms are also beginning to offer spin classes. Call your local gym to inquire about upcoming classes, or take the next approach: spinning from home.
Can You Spin From Home?
You may not get the same energy as an in-person class, but luckily for us, spin classes can be done from home!
If you’re looking to start spinning at home, you’ll need to get yourself a good spin bike. While this type of bike is ideal, you can also use almost any upright exercise bike.
Unfortunately, recumbent bikes make it harder to spin, as the seated position is nearly impossible to stand on while riding.
Youtube has dozens of high-quality spin class videos that you can follow. Some fitness studios may also offer a catalogue of online classes. Though, we’ve also managed to find some of the best online classes to take.

What Do You Need for Spin Class?
Do you have access to a spin bike (or plan on going to a class)? Here are some other things that you’ll need for a spin class:
- Comfortable cycling shoes. They have specific cycling shoes that can help clip into the pedals of a spin bike. Your gym may offer these.
- Lightweight and breathable workout clothes. We recommend shorts and a tank top made of athletic material.
- A bottle of water. You’ll be working up a sweat, so staying hydrated is key.
- A towel. As we said, you’ll be sweating a lot. You don’t want it dripping down your face the entire time!
